Virtual misery

George R. R. Martin’s Fantasy Books and Fans : The New Yorker:
"The more readers you have, the harder it is to keep up, and then you can’t get any writing done.”"
Will the death of traditional publishing times and the transition to self-publishing ebook markets constrain the authors to rhythms imposed by their audiences. After all, there won't be any advances to stretch during those long, "dry" times. Will hordes of virtual Anne Wilkes hold authors hostage?
